Upon successful completion of the course, scholars will be proficient in compiling, organizing, maintaining, and protecting confidential medical records while ensuring compliance with medical, legal, and ethical standards in health information systems. They will be adept at entering and maintaining information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), monitoring its accuracy, and identifying trends in audits and denials from payers. Also they will analyze clinical data for research and reporting, enhancing their role in healthcare administration
The program equips professionals with both theoretical and practical knowledge in Health Information Management (HIM), enabling them to design and develop efficient health information systems that meet regulatory standards and best practices. It also emphasizes the advocacy of privacy and confidentiality while preparing them to offer educational programs for healthcare personnel, ensuring secure healthcare data management and utilization, fostering continuous learning and compliance within the industry.
The School of Medical Education launched its Master's program in Medical Documentation in 1994. The curriculum is designed in a multidisciplinary format, incorporating basic medical science subjects, management, and computer science.
The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) have approved this course as a qualification for the position of Medical Record Librarian, and recruitment is conducted through the Kerala Public Service Commission.
The School of Medical Education, a self financing college, previously run directly by Mahatma Gandhi University till 2016, came into existence in 1993 with an aim of providing trained human resources in the area of allied medical and health sciences. Now this institution is under the control of Centre for Professional and Advanced Studies (CPAS), a Society established by Government of Kerala.
This is the pioneer self financing institution in the state of Kerala offering a variety of allied medical and health science courses. This is the only institution, spread across four districts in Kerala, conducting more than ten paramedical and allied health science courses under a single organisation. The Under Graduate and Postgraduate academic programmes of the school are so designed as to prepare skilled professionals of high calibre. Academic training and practice are imparted in collaboration with the Government Medical Colleges and reputed public and private sector establishments across India.

The course on Medical Documentation was conceived as a novel multidisciplinary area of study that includes everything to facilitate the study and practice of medical care. The main thrust area the curriculum includes a foundation course on, medical subjects and was created with the mission of moulding young professionals with the capability of collection, organisation, and dissemination of medical information, systematic management of medical records and hospital routines using the latest information technology options.
